Save routes and contacts for airport-to-home, home-to-campus and the nearest place to seek help. New York, Boston and Washington can rely more on public transport, while Los Angeles, Miami and many university towns may depend more on cars; the actual operator follows the home and campus.
Use school contacts before unfamiliar social groups
Keep school reception, accommodation, insurance and emergency numbers offline. If a room changes, you are late or arrival is disrupted, contact the school or housing provider with responsibility first. Do not send full passport, visa, I-20 or address pages to strangers because a group chat suggests it.
Prepare two routes for accounts and payment
Confirm phone unlock, backup account authentication, card usability and a small emergency cash amount. Coverage, hotspot and transit payment change by city; use the first week’s real commute and coursework needs before adding a local plan or subscription.
Use official and local guidance in an emergency
Use official emergency-help information and the school’s procedure. Personal safety, medical, insurance and legal issues do not have one universal app answer. Record time, location and contact, then follow official or qualified guidance.
