Distinguish the study-entry route by course length first
The UK government distinguishes short study by course length and character. For study at an accredited institution, including English, where the course is no longer than 6 months, GOV.UK lists the Standard Visitor study rules as the relevant route. A mainland China passport holder should enter nationality, purpose and course length in GOV.UK's “Check which visa you need” tool, rather than relying on somebody else's usual route.
For an English-only course lasting more than 6 and no more than 11 months, the official page maps to the Short-term study visa. This route does not permit study on another course or a course change in the UK, work (including unpaid work, work experience or a placement), extension, or dependants. English study beyond 11 months, or another course run by a licensed student sponsor, should instead be assessed against the Student visa course and sponsor requirements.

A lesson and a clock hour are not the same unit
A lesson is a school-defined class unit; a clock hour is 60 minutes. When comparing schools, 20 lessons per week does not automatically mean 20 clock hours. Obtain the minutes in each lesson, lessons per week, whether breaks count, and the split between taught time, support and self-study.
IH Newcastle's verified course record on this site is a readable example: it describes group lessons as 55 minutes while its course list is expressed as 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week. It is not a default conversion for other schools. It shows why a quote saying only “20 lessons per week” still needs the minutes entered into the same comparison table.
London: view school address, accommodation area and changes together
London suits students who want to place classroom-external English exposure in a large city's everyday life, but a budget must not contain only one line called “London accommodation”. Use the school's actual address and each possible accommodation postcode to test a route at the same time of day: interchange count, the final walk with luggage and a feasible route after an evening class all change the practical housing choice.
List tuition, room type and meals, any accommodation placement fee, weekly commuting and first-day arrangements separately. If one option is near the school and another is farther away, do not label both “London accommodation” and compare a weekly price alone. Retaining expected one-way time and interchange count shows whether an accommodation saving is consumed by commuting time and cost.
Oxford / Cambridge: test whether “university city” is your daily radius
Oxford and Cambridge both need comparison by specific campus and accommodation, not a promise implied by “university city”. Confirm course start dates and minimum duration first, then place the teaching location, whether meals are included, weekend preferences and daily shopping routes together. For a short course with repeated journeys to London or an airport, enter those journeys separately rather than hiding them in “living costs”.
For a student seeking a steadier daily rhythm, the useful questions are the ordinary route from accommodation to classroom, a fallback when one service is missed, and how the school manages the first day and placement. Put those answers under the same proposal before comparing London on the same course-and-housing basis; only then does a city name become a selectable plan.
Brighton: verify life outside class and commuting in a coastal-city choice
A Brighton choice should not stop at a “coastal” label. If you expect to use time outside class for walking, community activities or weekend trips, ask the school for its current activity calendar, meeting place and any separate charge. If you prefer quieter accommodation, verify the morning and evening route to the campus first. Activity promotion and the course promise are different information and cannot replace each other.
Break accommodation choices apart: meals plus move-in and move-out dates for homestay; room type, deposit and shared facilities for a residence; and contract and move-in terms for private rental. Each needs to connect to the course end date and return travel, so accommodation or the commute does not disappear as soon as class ends.
Use a recalculable weekly model, not a single total
Recalculate each city option with the same start date, course duration and room type. At minimum separate tuition; one-off registration or materials; accommodation and placement; commuting; insurance; transfers; and optional activities. Mark whether each item is one-off or weekly, when it is due, whether it is refundable, the quoted currency and the date checked. Then changing course length reveals what actually changes.
