NZTD is separate from a visa, NZeTA or school offer
NZTD collects travel, customs, immigration and biosecurity information. The New Zealand government says every person entering New Zealand must complete it, including New Zealand passport holders; visa and NZeTA holders must complete it as well. A language-school confirmation or immigration approval therefore does not remove this arrival declaration step.
For air travel, use the start of the journey to New Zealand
Air travellers may submit an NZTD from 24 hours before starting their journey to New Zealand, and it must be submitted by the time they reach passport control. On a multi-leg itinerary, do not mechanically use the last flight departure as the trigger. Follow the official timing rule for the actual journey and recheck after a material flight change.
Prepare the information before opening the declaration
The official site lists passport details, New Zealand contact information, travel details, travel history for the last 30 days, visa or NZeTA information where applicable, and items that need declaring. Questions are available in several languages, but answers must be entered in English. Check spellings and dates so the declaration does not conflict with school or accommodation records.
Use the official service and answer truthfully at arrival
NZTD is linked to the passport and checked at an eGate or by a border officer. It is free and can be completed online or in the official app; do not give passport or payment details to an unknown site claiming a declaration fee. If luggage or declarable goods have changed, follow the official arrival instructions and declare truthfully.
