Getting to know Spain

From Madrid and Barcelona to Andalusian cities, Spain offers distinct rhythms of life and many ways to build Spanish use through classes, homestays and city activity.

Spain includes several historical and cultural regions. Madrid sits at the centre; Barcelona has a strong Catalan identity; Andalusia reflects Islamic, Roma and Mediterranean influences; and the north includes Basque, Galician and Atlantic traditions.

Culture and everyday interaction

Meals and social life often happen later than in China. Squares, markets, cafés, festivals, football and family gatherings shape public life. A siesta is not observed by every city or industry, so base plans on actual school and shop hours.

Greetings, meals and social distance can feel more expressive than in northern Europe. Respect regional languages and identities rather than reducing all local culture to one 'Spanish' style.

Language environment and accents

Castilian Spanish is used nationwide. Catalan, Galician, Basque and Valencian have co-official status in their respective regions, and places such as Barcelona naturally use bilingual signs and media.

Central and northern Spain commonly distinguish c/z from s, while Andalusian and Canarian speech may weaken consonants and differ in pace and vocabulary. Latin American students commonly use seseo; these are all real forms of Spanish.

Climate, seasons and packing

Climate is highly varied: the central plateau has cold winters and hot summers; the Mediterranean coast is milder in winter; the Atlantic north is wetter; the Canary Islands are temperate year-round; and southern summers can be intensely hot.

March to June and September to November suit urban travel well. July and August are particularly hot in Madrid and Andalusia, while coasts and islands face high-season housing pressure. Winter works well for Madrid, Barcelona, southern and cultural routes.

Choosing a region

Course supply, housing cost, transport and pace vary widely. Start with the learning goal, then compare specific cities and campuses.

  • Madrid and Castile: widely used Castilian Spanish, museums and historic towns—consider Madrid, Toledo, Segovia and Salamanca.
  • Mediterranean coast and Catalonia: international life, design, coast and bilingual settings—consider Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante.
  • Andalusia and the islands: Islamic architecture, flamenco, coast and distinctive accents—consider Seville, Granada, Malaga and the Canary Islands.

Places and cultural experiences

Weekend experience should serve attendance, safety and rest. Opening hours, reservations and prices change, so verify through each official venue before travel.

  • Museo del Prado and Madrid's Art Triangle for Spanish and European art history.
  • Toledo and Segovia from Madrid for medieval religious coexistence, old towns and Roman remains.
  • Sagrada Família and Gaudí architecture in Barcelona for architecture, design and Catalan urban culture.
  • The Alhambra in Granada for Islamic architecture and Andalusian history; book ahead.
  • The Royal Alcázar and flamenco in Seville for palace, festival and performance traditions.
  • Valencia old town and City of Arts and Sciences for historic streets, contemporary architecture, beach and local food.

Food, transport and budget

Paella, tapas, jamón, tortilla, seafood and regional food vary markedly. Lunch is often the main meal and dinner is late; markets and menú del día can be good for local food and budget control.

High-speed rail links Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and other cities; metro and buses cover urban travel. Book popular long-distance tickets and places such as the Alhambra ahead.

Spain uses the euro. Budget separately for course, registration and materials, housing, transfers, insurance, visa, flights, local transport and daily costs.

Safety and emergency preparation

In major tourist cities, protect against pickpocketing, distraction scams and baggage theft. Manage summer heat and coastal currents; travel with others at night and confirm the way home.

  • Keep encrypted digital copies of passport and insurance.
  • Save school, housing, insurer and emergency contacts offline.
  • Confirm late return transport and do not store passport and all payment methods together.

Weekend-route ideas

These are planning ideas, not fixed itineraries. Recheck transport, weather and opening status before leaving.

  • Three days in Madrid and Toledo.
  • Three days of Barcelona architecture and coast.
  • Three days in Seville and Córdoba.
  • Three days in Granada and Malaga.

Visa and entry reminder for mainland Chinese students

Schengen short stays and longer study visas have different conditions. Mainland Chinese students should confirm documents through Spain's official visa channel according to the course duration.

Course length, provider type and personal circumstances affect the route. No online guide replaces current government rules; before payment or submission, recheck materials, processing information and entry conditions on the official page.
